What is Candida Overgrowth? Yeast Infections – A Modern Disease

Candida is the name of many types of yeast which live naturally in our bodies. The strain responsible for about 80% of yeast infections is Candida Albicans. When Candida yeast gets out of control this is termed “overgrowth”.

Candida yeast infection can affect men and women of all ages.

Usually Candida yeast is found in our intestines where it helps break down any food matter missed by the friendly bacteria in our digestive system. It is these bacteria along with our immune system that usually keep Candida yeast growth in check. When the natural balance of bacteria is upset or our immune system is weakened the Candida yeast takes the opportunity to multiply out of control – this is known as Candida overgrowth.

Other external factors can bring on Candida overgrowth – mercury, chlorine and artificial food additives.
